Falls & Fall Prevention in Older Adults

I am a self-proclaimed clumsy person. Over the years, I never thought much about it and would listen with curiosity when my grandma and mom talked about their fear of falling, thinking, “What’s the big deal?” Now, as I approach my 60s, I notice that recovering from a fall is not only more physically challenging, but it also affects me psychologically. It’s downright scary. Now, I totally get it.

Falls are one of the most common and serious issues contributing to disability, especially among elderly individuals. It can happen so easily—like tripping on a rug or slipping on a wet floor. More than one in four people aged 65 or older fall each year, and the risk rises with age. The good news is that falls can be prevented. Simple steps such as exercising, managing medications, checking your vision regularly, and making your home safer can make a big difference.

A significant advantage of moving into a senior living community is that these residences focus on making environments as safe as possible for aging adults. At Glencroft Center for Modern Aging, we’ve taken proactive measures, such as replacing carpeting with luxury vinyl flooring to reduce tripping hazards and providing a smoother surface for those using assistive devices like walkers and canes. All residents also receive personal response pendants to wear for safety. These GPS-enabled devices detect falls and can dispatch help instantly if needed.

Preventing falls is a primary focus in senior living, and our ZoeLife Program at Glencroft offers personal assessments for new residents, evaluating them and setting up individualized wellness plans. This includes six pillars of wellness—spiritual, emotional, social, physical, intellectual, and vocational health. For physical wellness, there are strength-building and balance classes, chair exercises, guided walks on beautiful trails shaded by mature trees, and more!

When you choose Glencroft as your home, you can live a full, active, and purposeful life!
